The surrogate role in nursing refers to a nurse serving as a substitute for a significant other in the patient’s life. This role was first introduced by nursing theorist Hildegard Peplau in 1952 when she described the importance of nurses assuming non-traditional roles, such as surrogate family members, to meet patients’ emotional and physical needs. While the term “surrogate role” may not be commonly used in contemporary nursing practice literature, nurses assuming roles beyond their traditional caregiving responsibilities remains relevant and practiced in modern healthcare settings (Wasaya et al., 2021, p. xx).

Nurses have long played a critical role in patient care, providing physical, emotional, and psychological support to patients and their families. However, as healthcare systems become increasingly complex and patients face more significant social and emotional challenges, nurses must assume more diverse and non-traditional roles to meet their patients’ thoroughly fully (Eltaybani et al., 2022, p. 5). The surrogate role is one such role that nurses can consider to provide emotional support, assist with decision-making, and act as a liaison between the patient and their healthcare providers.

The surrogate role is particularly relevant when patients lack adequate social support, are experiencing emotional distress, or have limited decision-making capacity. In these cases, the nurse can step in and provide emotional support, assist with decision-making, and advocate for the patient’s needs and wishes. For example, a patient with limited English proficiency may need the nurse to act as a translator and help them communicate with their healthcare providers. A patient grieving the loss of a loved one may need the nurse to provide emotional support and help them cope with their grief.

Moreover, the surrogate role is especially relevant in palliative and end-of-life care. The nurse may act as a surrogate family member and provide comfort, emotional support, and advocacy for the patient’s wishes and needs. In these situations, the nurse must communicate effectively with the patient and their family, provide emotional support and comfort, and advocate for their autonomy and dignity.

However, assuming the surrogate role can also present challenges for nurses. The nurse must maintain a professional boundary while providing emotional support and companionship to the patient. The nurse must also be mindful of their emotional and psychological well-being and ensure they are not taking on more than they can handle.

Despite these challenges, the surrogate role remains crucial in nursing practice, especially when patients lack social support or face end-of-life care. As healthcare systems become increasingly complex and patients face more significant social and emotional challenges, nurses must continue to adapt and assume non-traditional roles to thoroughly meet their patients’ needs. The surrogate role, in particular, provides a vital service to patients and their families, ensuring they receive the emotional support, advocacy, and companionship they need during difficult times.

Background and Pedagogical Rationale:  This assignment emphasizes precise thinking and language.  Students are often insensitive to or unaware of the distinction often made between “nominal” and “real” values: For instance, the distinction between “nominal” and “real” Gross Domestic Product (GDP) or, likewise, between “nominal” and “real” wages.

In order to receive a good grade on this assignment, students need to be sensitive to –and be able to explain—long run changes in the “nominal” and “real” value of the minimum wage. It is imperative that the student is able to describe/explain what is “going on” with changes in the minimum wage.

As a simple exercise in quantitative writing, the emphasis is tightly focused on tracking and explaining changes in data or a specific variable.

In the late 1990s, the stock prices of many companies were unusually high. These often-inflated stock prices meant high purchase prices for many business acquisitions and, in many cases, incredibly high values allocated to goodwill. When stock prices retreated in the new century, it became obvious that the book value of goodwill for many companies would never be recovered.

Acute pain acts as the body’s warning signal and typically goes away once the underlying cause has been treated. Typically, over-the-counter or prescription drugs are used to treat it.

Understanding Acute Pain

Acute pain is a type of pain that usually only lasts a short while and is acute and rapid in onset (less than 3 months).

After an organization has completed a SWOT analysis, it will carefully monitor both the internal and external environments to detect signs of opportunities and threats that could affect current and future plans. Conduct a personal strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis. In your analysis, consider the following:

• Are there co-workers/colleagues competing with you for positions or projects?
• Has the nature of your job changed?
• Does technology pose a threat to your position?
• Do any of your weaknesses pose a threat?
• What threats to your overall plan are there?

Once you have completed your SWOT analysis, identify strategies that you can use to capitalize on your strengths and open up opportunities, and address ways you can minimize areas of weakness and eliminate threats. Consider asking a trusted peer or friend to review your SWOT analysis and provide you with honest feedback. Analyze the feedback you receive and include that analysis in your assessment. Were there aspects of the feedback that surprised you?

To successfully complete this assessment, you may need to do some research on writing a SWOT analysis. Format this assessment as a research paper following current APA guidelines for both style and citing sources, making sure that you also use correct grammar and mechanics. There is no required minimum or maximum page length; however, you should strive to be as detailed as possible in addressing each bullet point, while also being as clear and concise as possible.

Introduction

This portfolio work project, a social media plan and PowerPoint presentation, will help you demonstrate competency in developing effective social media plans that build awareness, customer relationships, and customer loyalty.

Scenario

For this assessment, choose either Option 1 or Option 2. You do not need to do both. You will apply one of these scenarios in the Requirements below. Both options will be graded using the same scoring guide.

Option 1

You are an owner of Spokin’ Wheels, a locally owned bicycle shop with two locations. While your original location has been in business for several years, your second location has only been open a few months. The bicycle shops sell new and previously owned major brand bicycles. The shops also provide repairs, offer a small line of bicycle accessories and clothing, and organize group rides on Sunday mornings. You and your business partner both want to have a solid social media plan in place to grow the shops.

Option 1

You are one of two owners of Spokin’ Wheels. Your background is primarily in marketing. Your business partner’s background is in operations. While she is focused on making the internal customer-facing processes as efficient as possible, you are working on writing the social media plan.

Option 2

Your boss, a director, has tasked you with creating a social media plan. He is relying on you to prepare an analysis that can be presented to the executive team of the company. You completed a special project for him a few months ago that went very well. You are pleased to have received this new assignment.

Requirements

Develop a social media plan and a PowerPoint presentation of your plan for your selected company. At a minimum, address the following elements:

• Analyze customer segmentation characteristics. 
  • Develop two personas to portray your company’s customers based upon that analysis.
• Analyze appropriate social media platforms for developed personas. 
  • Analyze at least two platforms that will be most effective for the personas you developed. Describe why you think they will be effective.
  • Analyze at least two platforms that are not likely to be effective for this niche customer. Describe why you think they would not be effective.
• Develop a social media plan based upon the personas and platforms selected. Respond to the following: 
  • What platforms will your company use to drive traffic to your website?
  • What will customers be able to do once they are on your website?
  • How will these platforms engage with the customer?
  • What challenges do you anticipate in implementing your social media strategy? How will you overcome those challenges?

Deliverable Format

Requirements:

• The social media plan must be at least 8 pages in length, in addition to title and reference pages.
• The PowerPoint presentation must include at least eight (8) slides. 
  • Select a PowerPoint slide template appropriate for a professional presentation. Base your presentation on your social media plan, and include the supporting narrative as speaker’s notes. Do not overbuild your slides; information that supports what you will be saying should appear as speaker’s notes.

​Related company standards:

• The social media plan and PowerPoint presentation are professional documents and should therefore follow the corresponding MBA Academic and Professional Document Guidelines (available in the MBA Program Resources), including single-spaced paragraphs.
• Include at least two properly cited visual elements (for example, a table, figure, or picture).
• Use at least six scholarly or academic sources, where applicable, one of which must come from the Wall Street Journal, Forbes, or MIT Sloan Management Review.
• Use APA format for references.

Research and select an activist whom you respect; someone working for a cause they believe in.  Conduct research on your selected activist and write a 1-2 page response to the following questions:

·         Set and accomplish goals? 

·         What sets this person apart from others?

Theories describe and explain what happens during development. Theories also offer a way of trying to predict behavior. Often theories can be used to understand the people with whom we are closest. For example, Erikson’s 8 Stages might help you understand why your teenage son cares more about his friend’s opinion than your perspective.
